  31. WHAT IS FRENETIC
  32. ----------------
  33.  
  34. Frenetic is a screensaver for Windows. It creates an endless variety of
  35. colorful graphic abstractions by combining a wealth of drawing elements to
  36. paint pictures on your screen, then it clears them off and starts afresh.
  37.  
  38. Sometimes it takes a while to generate something interesting, so please give
  39. it a few goes if it is not initially appealing. You can move it along by
  40. pressing 'f'.

  42. Supports 16 color VGA, 256 color SVGA, 24-bit color.

  45. INSTALLATION
  46. ------------
  47.  
  48. Windows 3.1
  49.  
  50. 1. Copy the file frenetic.scr into your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  51.  
  52. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  53.  
  54. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  55.  
  56. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Frenetic.
  57.  
  58. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  59.  
  60. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  61.    configuration options.

  65.  
  66. 1. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  67.  
  68. 2. Double click on the Display icon.
  69.  
  70. 3. Click on the Screensaver tab.
  71.  
  72. 4. In the Screen Saver list, select Frenetic.
  73.  
  74. 5. Click Preview to run the screensaver.
  75.  
  76. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  77.    configuration options.

  81. SETUP OPTIONS
  82. -------------
  83.  
  84. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  85. screen by pressing the Options button.
  86.  
  87. Available options:
  88.  
  89. HIDE MOUSE
  90.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  91.     screensaver is running.
  92.  
  93. SPEED
  94.     1    Changes the speed to Slow, so that only the slower drawings
  95.          are used, making it less distracting if you are trying to work
  96.          next to the computer.
  97.  
  98.     2    Normal speed - uses all drawings.
  99.  
  100.     3    Changes the speed to Fast, making it more entertaining.

  103. TEXT MESSAGES
  104.     You can have your own messages periodically displayed by entering a
  105.     series of phrases, each separated by a semi-colon, such as "text=My
  106.     message;Second message;Third;fourth". The messages are displayed at
  107.     random, and not necessarily immediately or every run.
  108.  
  109. Note that for the unregistered version, the above options only apply to the
  110. very next run of Frenetic, and then they are cleared.
  111.  
  112. SAFE MODE
  113.     Select this option if Frenetic occasionally crashes with a General
  114.     Protection Fault. When selected, Frenetic will avoid graphics which have
  115.     caused problems with some video drivers.
  116.

  118. PASSWORD PROTECTION
  119. -------------------
  120.     Password protection is only available for Windows 3.1, because under
  121.     Windows 95, Control+Alt+Delete allows Frenetic to be cancelled.
  122.  
  123.     Warning: the security of your machine is not guaranteed when using the
  124.     Frenetic password protection because due to the complexity of the
  125.     screensaver and different machine configurations, there is the possibility
  126.     that Frenetic may crash and leave your machine available.

  129. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  130. ---------------
  131.  
  132. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  133.  
  134. 1,2,3    Selects the speed, as described above under Setup Options.
  135.  
  136. c    The Colors being used will be changed and the screen cleared.
  137.  
  138. f    The current drawing will Finish. Useful if it appears to be stuck or you
  139.      want it to move on.
  140.  
  141. h,H  For users whose mouse doesn't disappear, possibly because some other
  142.      program has left the internal Windows mouse counter too high, pressing
  143.      'h' decrements the counter. When it reaches zero, the mouse disappears.
  144.      'H' increments it. (Registered version only)
  145.  
  146. k    Keeps running with the current colors, & avoids clearing the screen so
  147.      that the image builds on itself as much as possible. (Registered version
  148.      only)
  149.  
  150. o    Displays an order form, which can be printed (Unregistered version only).
  151.  
  152. p,P  Pressing p will cause Frenetic pause at the end of the current drawing,
  153.      and not continue until you press shift+P. This is useful for those times
  154.      Frenetic takes a long while to draw something you want to see, but then
  155.      it wipes it immediately. By pausing, the drawing will remain on the
  156.      screen until you restart Frenetic. (Registered version only)

  159. REGISTRATION & BENEFITS
  160. -----------------------
  161.  
  162. Frenetic Screensaver is "try before you buy" software, and is provided with a
  163. free 14-day evaluation period.
  164.  
  165. When you register Frenetic, it will
  166.     * display its full range of graphics over time
  167.     * allow the use of run-time keystroke options listed above
  168.     * allow password protection (Windows 3.1 only)
  169.     * save your Setup Options, including your own text messages
  170.     * remove registration reminder messages...
  171.  
  172. The screensaver occasionally displays registration reminder messages like
  173. "Please register Frenetic".  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be
  174. mailed, faxed or emailed a code which will remove these messages. This
  175. registration code is entered into the Registration field on the Setup screen.
  176.  
  177. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  178. development of additional graphics, features and products.
  179.

  206. on to Compuserve, enter GO SWREG, and request ID 4667.

  208. In order to keep the cost of Frenetic low, diskettes are not mailed as part of
  209. the base registration.  The latest version is available on various on-line
  210. services as described below.

  216. CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS
  217. --------------------
  218.  
  219. Credit card payments may be made using VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  220. Bankcard. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri,
  221. which can then be faxed or mailed to Seraline. An order form can also be
  222. printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or by pressing 'o' while
  223. Frenetic is running.  The details required are Credit Card type, card number,
  224. card expiry date and your signature.  These details can be mailed, or faxed to
  225. Seraline in Australia +61-2-879-4481.
  226.  
  227. Note that credit cards are billed at exactly $19.95 Australian. For other
  228. currencies, the amount appearing on your card will depend on the foreign
  229. exchange rate at the time. For example, at rates current in October 1995, this
  230. converts to an amount between US$14 and US$15.
  231.  
  232. We support PGP encryption for sending credit card details via email. To
  233. receive our public key, send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au with
  234. "send public key" as the subject. On receipt of our key, create a text message
  235. containing your name, credit card type (VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  236. Bankcard), credit card number and expiry date. Use PGP to encrypt the message,
  237. and email it to porum@ozemail.com.au.

  240. TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
  241. ----------------------
  242.  
  243. Because there can be a delay in sending and processing mail registrations, a
  244. temporary code can be provided by email. When you have mailed your order, you
  245. can also send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au and a temporary code
  246. which expires will be emailed back to you. When your payment is received, a
  247. registration code will be sent.

  250. LICENSE
  251. -------

  253. Frenetic is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by Seraline Pty
  254. Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected by Australian
  255. copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  256.  
  257. The registration fee will license Frenetic for use on any computers in your
  258. home, and on one computer at work on which you are the primary user.
  259.  
  260. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  261. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  262. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  263. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.

  265. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile, disassemble,
  266. otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program except as
  267. provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result in
  268. immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  270. Registered users will be licensed to use, free of charge, any version 3.nn of
  271. Frenetic, and they will be notified by email of any significant 3.nn updates.
  272. Registered users will also be advised by email when the major upgrade to
  273. version 4 becomes available.

  292. Please note that although Frenetic is released with no known defects that
  293. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  294. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  295. video drivers.  You should use the evaluation period to check that Frenetic
  296. does not cause problems with your system. See KNOWN PROBLEMS below for some
  297. work-arounds. If it crashes each day, there may be an incompatibility,
  298. although this shouldn't cause any other problems apart from stopping the
  299. screensaver.  If it crashes Windows, stop running Frenetic.

  317. VERSION NUMBER EXPLANATION
  318. --------------------------
  319.  
  320. Frenetic's version number is in four parts: A.B.C.D
  321.  
  322. A    The major version number - changed for major upgrades. Notification is
  323.      sent by email to registered users.
  324.  
  325. B    Minor version number - changed when there have been significant
  326.      enhancements to the graphics. Email notification sent.
  327.  
  328. C    Minor changes to the graphics. Usually only uploaded to the Web page,
  329.      and no announcement is made.
  330.  
  331. D    Minor changes to the documentation.

  335. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  336. --------------
  337.  
  338. Some video drivers seem to get a GP Fault when too much stretching or
  339. shrinking is applied to fonts or images. If you find you get several GP
  340. Faults, then try selecting Safe Mode on the Options screen under Control
  341. Panel/Desktop/Setup. If there are still GP Faults, try adding the line
  342. "fonts=no" to the Frenetic section in your c:\windows\control.ini, using
  343. Notepad.

  345. There is a small chance that Frenetic may crash and leave you without a mouse
  346. until you restart Windows.  Crashes are unlikely, but there are a lot of
  347. permutations, and the Frenetic Screensaver is not guaranteed to never crash.
  348. Should this be a problem, you can have the cursor always displayed by
  349. de-selecting "Hide Mouse Cursor" on the Options screen.

  351. Any screensaver as calculation-intensive as Frenetic may slow down other
  352. running tasks such as printing or faxes. If there is such a problem, you can
  353. try increasing the priority of the printing by running Print Manager from
  354. the Main group in Program Manager, and selecting the menu Options/Background
  355. Printing, and select High priority.
